Now the NNPC told us that the NNPC has been importing fuel at N171 and selling it at a lower price to the marketers. We also learnt that it is not only the NNPC that has been importing fuel into Nigeria, that some other companies, some of them fictitious companies not registered under the CAC, have been importing refined fuel into Nigeria and the NNPC has been paying a subsidy of N26.00 to those companies for every litre of fuel sold to the NNPC. The worst part of this arrangement is that unlike previous regimes where this is open and transparent, Nigerians are not aware that the NNPC is paying N26.00 to any fuel importer for any litre of fuel, until the NNPC disclosed this when Nigerians started blaming them on the fuel scarcity.
